Missile 8

The Swedish Navy purchased a number of fast patrol boats from Norway. The weaponry chosen was the Norwegian Anti-Surface Ship missile Penguin. As SAAB had a great experience of this type of missile they proposed an alternative to the Penguin missile.

In September 1971 SAAB presented their missile, The SAAB RB 8, which was a powder driven missile with a radar homing unit. The range was approx. 16 miles (25 km). Several of it’s included units were obtained from another missile, the RB 04 E.

The Navy desired an extended range and a better performance than the RB 8 provided. They also desired a system that also would suit future Air-to-Surface and coastal missile units.

The patrol boats were armed with the Penguin missile,
