RB 04C

The missile 04C was an aircraft borne Air-to-Surface missile for combating sea targets at far distances.

The missile was operative from 1961 and adaptive to the armament of the aircraft A32 Lance and later also adapted to the aircraft AJ37 Thunderbolt.

In cooperation with the Royal Swedish Air Force Material Administration some 300 RB 04C were manufactured at CVA in Arboga. Previously, an extensive test activity had been accomplished with the test missiles RB 304 A and RB 304B. These test missiles were also manufactured and furnished by the CVA workshop.

Function

After launching at a high altitude the powder rocket ignited. A radar altimeter lowered the missile to about 30 feet (10 m) above the water level, and subsequently the homing device started up. The homing unit was a single plane, active radar homing, working with a CW-mode. (Continuous Wave-mode). With the assistance of the homing unit the missile was directed to a location above the target and the warhead was initiated by the proximity fuse. The warhead had the capacity to destroy very huge watercraft.

Since the missile RB 04C became operative in 1961, it was the first functioning Anti-Surface Ship Missile in the Western world.
