Missile RB 12 Penguin

The missile system 12 with the missile 12 Mk 2 constitutes the main armament on our reconnaissance boats. These crafts can be armed with six RB 12 missiles and can operate against maritime assaults along the entire Swedish coast line. The reconnaissance boats are of the

HMS Hugin and HMS Kaparen class. The missile system 12 is manufactured in Norway, where it carries the designation the Penguin, Mk 2, modification 3. The Swedish version received the designation missile Mk 12, modification 3.Towards the end of the 1980’s the system was upgraded with addition of IR-homing and the designation was changed to RB 12 Mk 2, modification 5. Following later modifications the designation was changed to RB 12 Mk 2, modification 6.

On board the reconnaissance boat there is an integrated missile control panel in the Action Information Centre plus a similar console on the navigation bridge. Missile system 12 can receive information from several sources. With guidance from these sources, the Captain can choose the targets and then engage up to six missiles against them. After the Captain has selected his chosen target, he makes the required settings on the integrated missile control panel and selects the missile to be fired. Upon firing, the front cap of the barrel is automatically opened before the solid propellant sustainer is ignited. When the rocket booster has stopped deflagrating, the missile glides towards the target. Using its inertial navigation system the missile will arrive at the target area, where the homing will take over up to the target. At the hit the missile warhead is ignited.
