RBS 17 Hellfire

RBS 17 is a light coastal missile system intended to operate from shore against ships and sea crafts. Basically it is the American antitank missile AGM – 114 Hellfire that has been advanced by Bofors. RBS 17 can be carried by two operators at redeployment in the coastal archipelago terrain.

RBS 17 became operative at the coast artillery in 1990.

System description

An active firing unit consists of two missile firearms, a control box with power supply and a number of missiles in packages and a laser illuminator plus an IR sighting arrangement with power supply.

The laser illuminator doesn’t need to be grouped together with the missile firearms but can with great tactical freedom be far separated from these, for example on a different island. Wire and wireless liaison are usually used for the communication between the formation units.

RB 17 is equipped with a semi-active homing device and for a hit the missile requires the guidance to a designated target point, irradiated by the laser illuminator. At night and at reduced visibility an IR-sight is shunted to the laser illuminator. The missile is propelled by a powder rocket motor.
