The missile RB 71 was an air-to-air missile with a medium range used by the aircraft JA 37 Thunderbolt. (JA 37 Viggen).

Missile RB 71 is the Swedish designation for the English missile Sky Flash, developed and manufactured by British Aerospace Defence Dynamics. The missile has been operative on the JA 37 Thunderbolt since 1980 and has been modified in Sweden during the 1990’s.

System description

The missile RB 71 is an air-to-air missile, which means that the missile is equipped with a passive radar receiver, which activates when the a/c radar has spotted the target.


The reflected radar beams are captured by the missile homing device, which creates the information the missile needs about its direction to the target.


The following main components are included in the missile RB 71:

-Homing unit /proximity fuse section
-Automatic control unit / power unit section

-Wing hub section with control surfaces

-Rocket motor with wings and a rear antenna


The homing unit receives radar echoes from the target and other background, filters the target signals and forwards them to the automatic control unit. The homing device is composed of an antenna, receiver and a signal processing unit.

The homing unit transforms the direction signals to target data for the missile. The automatic control unit also ensures that the missile goes into a stable course. This control principle is called bearing aim control. The proximity fuse will detect, when the missile is in an active combat position and through the fuse- and arming units it will initiate the warhead. A direct hit on the target will also initiate the warhead.

The shrapnel of the warhead is of a link type “continuous rod”, which means that the explosives are surrounded by two layers of steel rods. The steel rods are joined at the ends, forming a continuous rod.

At the detonation it forms into a steel circle that hits and gives a cohesive cut in the target.

The missile will reach a supersonic velocity from a powder rocket motor, which is designed so that no powder gases will prevent illumination radar reference signal to reach the rear antenna. The reference signal is required for the missile so it will with certainty know that the reflected radar echoes actually derived from the a/c radar.
